Why teen drivers are so risky on the roads

Traffic crashes are the number one cause of death for teens between the ages of 15 and 20. And while these teens may be a risk to themselves on the road, the findings of a new study conducted by AAA also indicate that teens present a huge risk to other motorists as well.

In fact, according to this study, nearly 67 percent of the people hurt or killed in teen driver crashes were people other than the teen driver. This means that, in 2013, more than 270,000 people were injured or killed by teen drivers.

Commenting on these findings, Peter Kissinger, CEO of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, has noted that:

Teen crash rates are higher than any other age group, and this data confirms that the impact of their crashes extends well beyond the teen who is behind the wheel.

Dangers Associated with Teen Motorists

Just some of the specific reasons why teen drivers are such a big risk on the roads, according to these researchers, include that these young motorists:

  1. Lack experience behind the wheel – This generally means that teen drivers do not have the skills or knowledge to appropriately assess and respond to potential dangers on the road. This inexperience can end up causing bigger risks when the driving conditions may be more complicated due to, for instance, heavier traffic, poor road conditions or adverse weather.
  2. Are far more susceptible to distracted driving – In fact, while the NHTSA has estimated that about 11 percent of deadly teen driver accidents involve a distracted teen driver, AAA’s findings suggest that up to 6 in every 10 collisions caused by teen motorists involve distracted driving.
  3. Are more likely to engage in risky behaviors when other teens are in the vehicle – With just one other teen passenger riding with a teen motorist, the risk of being killed in a traffic accident surges to about 44 percent. Add more teens to the mix, and this risk exponentially increases, tripling or even quadrupling when three or more teen passengers ride with teen drivers.
