As part of federal regulators’ continual efforts to prevent traffic accidents, officials at the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) have recently announced that they will be adding automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems to the federal 5-Star Vehicle Safety Rating System by 2018.
AEB systems can apply the brakes when a crash may be imminent and when:
- Drivers have not yet taken any action to try to avoid the crash (crash imminent braking); or
- Drivers’ braking force is not adequate to prevent the accident (dynamic brake support).
By adding AEB systems to the federal safety Rating System, regulators hope to:
- “Accelerate the spread of crash avoidance technology”
- Continue providing consumers with accurate, up-to-date vehicle safety information so that they can make informed choices when it’s time to buy a vehicle.
Why AEB Systems Have Been Added to the Rating System, According to Regulators
The reason that this Rating System update is so significant, according to regulators, is that about 1 in every 3 traffic accidents in the U.S. is a rear-end collision and AEB systems can be remarkably effective at preventing these types of accidents.
As NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind has explained, “[Federal regulators are] putting the brakes on rear-end crashes…Wherever possible, NHTSA will encourage and accelerate technological innovations that save lives.”
U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx elaborated on these comments, explaining that:
We are adding automatic emergency braking features to the 5-Star Rating System because crash-avoidance technologies can save lives and should be widely accessible… AEB can substantially enhance safety, especially with the number of distracted drivers on the road.
To help consumers understand the potential benefits of AEB systems, regulators have developed and published some online resources about them available here.
