People often shrug off a minor fall. Comics engage in pratfalls on stage, and cartoon characters are depicted slipping on banana peels. But the reality is that a slip and fall accident can leave the victim in serious pain with significant injuries. For the elderly, a slip and fall is even more dangerous. Seniors are often frail and a fall can cause a severe hip fracture or head injury that eventually leads to death.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), each year one in three adults age 65 and older suffers a fall. Among this group, falls are the leading cause of injury death. The CDC further reports that 2.3 million nonfatal fall injuries were reported in 2010 for older adults treated in emergency rooms. Of this group, 662,000 were hospitalized.
Injuries after a fall may cause:
- Hip fractures
- Head trauma
- Fracture of spine, forearm, leg, ankle, pelvis, upper arm, hand
While not all slip and falls are actionable, owners of property where a slip and fall occurs can be held liable in certain situations where unreasonable harm occurred. Owners of premises must maintain their property in a way that eliminates a dangerous situation if possible.
Everyone should be able to walk through a parking lot, store, or restaurant without suffering an injury, especially one that could easily have been removed by proper maintenance. Do not hesitate to seek legal advice after suffering a slip and fall accident.
